NEWS240W PD3.1 Reference Design Pairs PFC With AHB GaN Stage
A single-port 240W design combines a CRM PFC front end with an AHB GaN stage, reaching 95.88% peak efficiency and 1.46W/cm3 at 48V/5A.

A China-based power-semiconductor vendor has released a 240W single-port USB-C reference design built around a PFC front end and an asymmetric half-bridge (AHB) DC-DC stage using gallium nitride switches. The board accepts 90-264Vac and delivers the full PD3.1 240W envelope, with the USB-C port rated to 48V at 5A. The sample unit is a black square enclosure measuring 95.18 by 80.70 by 33.32mm and weighing 332.8g.
The PFC stage uses a critical-conduction-mode controller that shifts to discontinuous mode with valley turn-on at lighter loads, paired with two 700V, 101mohm GaN devices driven at 12V. The controller is specified for applications up to 300W and integrates soft start plus input under-voltage, output over-voltage and under-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection.
On the secondary side, an AHB controller with two integrated 700V GaN switches handles isolation and step-down, running at up to 800kHz and relying on resonant operation for zero-voltage turn-on and zero-current turn-off. A synchronous-rectification controller then drives two paralleled MOSFETs, cutting conduction loss in the 48V/5A path.
Measured peak efficiency reached 95.88% at 264Vac input and 48V/5A output, against 93.24% at 90Vac, 94.28% at 115Vac and 95.52% at 230Vac. Full-load power factor was 0.995 at 90Vac and 0.992 at 115Vac, and the design claims 1.46W/cm3 power density. Average efficiency across the load range came to 93.02% to 95.22%, rising with input voltage.
The port enumerates seven fixed PDOs: 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/5A, 28V/5A and 48V/5A, and also supports QC3.0, FCP, SCP, AFC, DCP and Apple 2.4A. Conducted emissions at 230Vac and 48V/5A stayed below EN55032 Class B limits, while radiated margin was at least 4.67dB in the vertical plane near 150.6MHz.
