Honor 120W GaN Charger Uses Three AiSHi 400V Capacitors

A teardown reported by Capacitor World details the high-voltage section of Honor's 120W GaN charger, model HN-200600C02. The unit uses three AiSHi aluminum electrolytic capacitors, each rated 400V 27uF, in parallel for a total of 81uF of filtering and energy storage after rectification.

The charger delivers up to 120W from a cube-shaped body measuring about 45.09 x 44.95 x 31.02mm, for a power density of 1.91W/cm3. The teardown attributes part of that to a planar transformer and GaN high-frequency devices, which raise switching frequency and cut the board area taken by conventional power components and magnetics.

Volume reduction at this density is not only about switching devices and transformers. The high-voltage capacitors after the rectifier bridge handle DC bus filtering and energy storage, and their capacitance affects supply stability for the downstream conversion stage. They are also among the larger components inside a charger, so capacitance, footprint and placement must be balanced.

In this design the three 27uF AiSHi parts are grouped in the high-voltage area of the mainboard, after the rectifier bridge and ahead of the main conversion stage. They smooth ripple on the rectified DC bus and store energy that buffers the downstream stage when input voltage fluctuates or output power changes quickly, supporting stable operation of the 120W system.

Splitting the capacitance across three parts allows 81uF of high-voltage storage in a body about 45mm square, leaving room for surrounding power and magnetic components. As fast-charging power rises, capacitance is no longer the only constraint: designers must also weigh energy storage against ripple current, temperature rise and layout, and aluminum electrolytic parts still hold that energy-storage role in high-frequency, miniaturized supplies.
