NEWSSi-Power Launches SP9676E 700V GaN Co-Packaged AC/DC Chip
A high-frequency quasi-resonant flyback controller that integrates a 700V GaN device in one HSOP-8 package for PD/PPS supplies.

Si-Power has introduced the SP9676E, a high-frequency quasi-resonant flyback AC/DC controller with an integrated 700V GaN power device for PD/PPS fast charging and high power-density supplies. It combines the high-voltage switch and AC/DC control function in one device to simplify the primary-side power stage, and standby power is specified below 75 mW.
The integrated GaN FET sits directly in the primary power loop of the flyback converter, with DRAIN and SOURCE pins serving as the drain and source of the GaN device. Putting control and power device on the same chip reduces the external high-voltage switching component count. Target applications include PD/PPS adapters, phone fast chargers and high power-density supplies; the package is HSOP-8.
Control behaviour changes with load. At full load the chip uses valley-lock mode to limit frequency variation at high switching frequencies, moving to fast frequency foldback as load falls to cut switching loss, and then to a frequency-hopping burst mode. Frequency jitter is supported to improve EMI.
Because PD/PPS outputs cover a wide voltage range, the SP9676E includes a precision primary current-limit circuit that keeps the output current limit relatively constant as output voltage is adjusted, helping meet LPS requirements. Single-stage and two-stage current limiting suit single-port and multi-port chargers.
Further features include adaptive loop-gain compensation, burst mode with output-voltage compensation and dynamic drive-strength adjustment intended to lower stress on secondary rectifiers. Start-up soft start is 4 ms. Protection covers cycle-by-cycle OCP, OLP, external OTP, output short-circuit protection and current-sense resistor open/short, plus output over-voltage and VDD over/under-voltage. A multiplexed PRT pin handles external OTP, valley detection, output short circuit and output OVP sensing.
Key points
- 700V GaN device and QR flyback controller co-packaged in a single HSOP-8 chip
- Standby power below 75 mW; start-up soft start of 4 ms
- Valley-lock, frequency foldback and burst modes cover full to light load
- Precision primary current limiting in single-stage or two-stage settings
