Teardown: 10000mAh Bank Runs Two Independent 20W USB-C Rails

The CIO SMARTCOBY DUO pairs two power-bank SoCs so each bidirectional USB-C port holds 20W when both are loaded, with 21700 cells and one protection IC.

The CIO SMARTCOBY DUO is a 10000mAh power bank whose two USB-C ports are both bidirectional and each rated 20W under PD3.0. Unlike most dual-port packs, it does not derate when both outputs are in use: the pair holds 20W plus 20W for 40W total. A dot-matrix LED shows remaining capacity as a percentage, and pass-through charging is supported.

The nameplate gives 10000mAh at 3.7V (37Wh), maximum input of 18W per port, and output steps of 5V/2.4A, 9V/2.22A and 12V/1.68A. Testing measured 17.8W on one port at 12V and 16.8W on the other, with identical PDO sets on both. The port also advertises QC3.0, FCP, SFCP, DCP and Apple 2.4A.

Inside, two 21700 cylindrical cells of 5000mAh each sit in parallel, joined by nickel strip, with an NTC thermistor under insulating paper on the cell tops. A single protection IC covers over-charge, over-discharge, over-current and short-circuit conditions. The cell stack and PCB are located by moulded clips and tape rather than screws.

The PCB carries two power-bank SoCs of the same type, each combining a buck-boost controller, integrated FETs and a fuel gauge, and each driving one USB-C receptacle - which is how the two channels stay independent at 20W. Blue thermal pads bridge the SoCs to the shell, the two inductors are sleeved for insulation, and a small unmarked MCU sits beside them.

The enclosure measures 91.8 by 50.7 by 25.1mm and weighs 182.4g. For buyers, the layout shows a route to 40W combined output without a second inductor-heavy boost stage or a derating policy, at the cost of duplicate control silicon.

Key points

  • Two bidirectional USB-C ports, 20W each, 20W+20W with both loaded
  • 10000mAh at 3.7V (37Wh); 18W max input per port
  • Two identical power-bank SoCs, one buck-boost rail per USB-C port
  • 182.4g, 91.8 x 50.7 x 25.1mm; clips and tape instead of screws
