TI 65W Ultra-Thin GaN Reference Design Uses Planar Transformer

TI's PMP41163 reference board pairs the UCG28826 GaN flyback IC with a PCB planar transformer to hold total height under 10 mm at 65 W.

TI's PMP41163 reference design targets 65 W USB-C PD charging in a planar AC-DC architecture. It pairs the UCG28826 integrated GaN flyback converter with a PCB planar transformer, cutting overall height rather than board area.

The board accepts 90-264 Vac and delivers 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A and 20V/3.25A, up to 65 W. Measured size is 72.31 x 39.73 x 9.66 mm at about 42.4 g. Two 47 uF/400 V electrolytics are mounted horizontally, alongside a 33 uH common-mode choke and 100 nF X capacitor for EMI filtering.

The UCG28826 integrates a flyback controller and GaN power device with quasi-resonant valley switching, plus high-voltage startup, current sensing, X-capacitor discharge, brownout, OTP, OVP, SCP, OCP and OPP. Its VCC self-bias removes the auxiliary winding and VCC rectifier, simplifying transformer windings and the PCB layer stack. The EDI2721 planar transformer uses a 7:1 turns ratio and 170 uH primary inductance, with switching near 180 kHz at high line and full load.

At 20V/3.25A, efficiency reaches 92.41% from 90 Vac and 93.82% from 230 Vac. From 115 Vac, full-load efficiency is 90.74%, 92.76%, 93.55% and 93.51% at 5 V, 9 V, 15 V and 20 V. No-load power is 47/49/61/69 mW at 90/115/230/264 Vac, meeting DoE Level VI and CoC V5 Tier 2.

Open-board thermal testing at 20V/3.25A measured 85.3°C at the rectifier bridge and 75.8°C at the UCG28826 with 90 Vac input; at 230 Vac the chip fell to 58.6°C while the planar transformer, synchronous rectifier MOSFET and its controller reached 82.2°C, 81.6°C and 87.3°C. Conducted EMI stayed within EN55032 limits at 115 Vac and 230 Vac. Short circuits self-recover, and an open feedback loop triggers latched OVP at 25.6 V.

Key points

  • 65 W output: 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A and 20V/3.25A from 90-264 Vac input
  • Board measures 72.31 x 39.73 x 9.66 mm, about 42.4 g, under 10 mm tall
  • UCG28826 GaN flyback IC uses VCC self-bias, removing the auxiliary winding
  • 93.82% efficiency at 230 Vac and 61 mW no-load power at 230 Vac
